Some of the cub leaders have been learning some canoe and kayak skills this weekend. They attended the BCU Kayak & Canoe 2 Star training hosted by 1st Luton Sea Scouts (http://www.firstluton.co.uk/). The pictures show us at the end of the day rescuing our selves and others from capsized canoes. Gaining the award is a step towards us getting the permits to take Stotfold beavers/cubs/scout/explorers out on the water ourselves! Now all we need is to get some canoes! 😉

Now that we are well into the Scouting Year, please find below a couple of updates and reminders:
Jumble Sale – Saturday 17th October
We will be holding our next Jumble Sale on Saturday 17th October at 2pm. We will need people to help on the Saturday morning and in the afternoon during the event. We also need donations of biscuits and cakes for us to sell.
If you have any jumble please bring it the scout hut on Friday 16th October (7.30-9.00pm) or on the day between 9-11am. Alternatively contact John McBurney on 07958 555536 for collection of jumble.
Cakes/biscuits can be dropped off at the hut on the Saturday morning.
Also, would you be willing to have a Country Properties board erected outside your house to help advertise the event? Once again, please contact John if you can help out here.
Christmas Shopping Day – 7th November
This year, the Scout Group’s Christmas Shopping Day will be held at the Hut on Saturday 7th November, from 12 noon to 4 pm. Entry is £2 for adults, with a free glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. We hope this event will be even better than last year’s; we already have a wide range of stallholders booked to attend.
Similar to last year, we would be very grateful if parents could donate a box of mince pies for the event; please bring donations to the scout hut the week beginning November 2nd or on the day of the event from 9 am. We will also be providing refreshments this year, and would be glad of donations of homemade cakes to sell.
We would appreciate any help on the day with refreshments (teas, coffees, making mulled wine) or selling raffle tickets; if we have enough helpers, you will only need to volunteer for an hour at most. Please speak to Sarah Passey before the event, or just turn up on the day.
Finally, please help us to advertise this event by telling your friends and family and sharing the event poster as widely as possible (attached).
Remembrance Day Parade – Sunday 8th November
We will meet at Stotfold Cemetery from 2:15pm for a short service of Remembrance at 2:45pm for those who have given their lives for our Country. We will then parade to St Mary’s Church where there will be a Service of Remembrance.
I hope that all the members of our Scout Group (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) will support this event. We only ask the young people to take part in two parades a year, that of St George’s Day and Remembrance Sunday, and I feel that this is an important part of being in the Scouting Movement.
The Beavers will not asked to attend the Church service at St Mary’s Church. So parents please pick up Beavers from St Mary’s Church, after the parade, about 3:30pm.
The weather is not always kind to us on this day in November, but I like the young people to parade in full uniform, without jumpers or coats. A couple of tea shirts under the uniform will keep them warm. If it is pouring with rain then I will make a decision on behalf of the whole group as to suitable
You are most welcome to join us for all of part of the parade and can provide a great carrier service for clothing! If there are any issues about this parade which concerns you then please drop me an email or talk to your young person’s Leader. Pick up from St Mary’s Church about 4:15pm.
Leaders & Helpers
Fred Knowles has taken over as the Scout Leader on Fridays. Rachel Wasson has joined as an assistant Beaver Scout Leader at Tuesday Beavers.
At the moment we are seeking some additional help for Thursday Cubs and Explorers. Both Cubs and Explorers provide fantastic opportunity to get involved in some adventurous activities and work with some great young people.

Reminder about section programmes
The various sections always put their programme’s on the Scout website. We are also increasingly putting important forms and paperwork on there.
Don’t forget to join the Stotfold Scout Group Facebook page – We regularly post updated about the Scout Group on the page.
We are very fortunate to have a district scout shop and some of the funds go towards keeping the district campsite running. It’s also great to test out shirt/ jumper sizes if you’re not completely sure and do not want the hassle of returning goods online.

The young people have an action packed year. We are also preparing to have a group camp at Boyd field along with the rest of the district next May. Big Jam 2016.

Our St George’s Day celebration will take place on Sunday 26th April 2014 at 2:00pm (arrive at 1.50pm in preparation) at the Scout Hut.
This year we will also be celebrating 50 years of Scouting in Stotfold. The whole event will take place at the Scout hut. Fellow scouter’s, parents and guardians are very welcome to attend.
